Types of braces

Ceramic braces

Ceramic braces are transparent and are affixed to the front of the teeth. Depending on your preference, the wires can be transparent or metal.
Throughout the treatment, the wires are adjusted to ensure that the teeth are gradually moved to the desired position. Ceramic braces are often worn by adults because they are less visible than metal braces and tongue tamers.

Metal braces

These are the familiar wire braces made of stainless steel. Wire braces are affixed to the front of the teeth. Throughout the treatment, the wires are adjusted to ensure that the teeth are gradually moved to the desired position.
Metal braces are visible and are hugely popular among teenagers. In the case of adults as well, wearing braces is widely accepted. Consider the less-visible ceramic applications.

Clear aligners by Invisalign:

Invisalign uses a range of transparent, removable aligners that are placed over the teeth. You will receive a set of aligners that are made specifically for you according to your needs.

Invisalign®

You can remove the aligners to eat, drink, participate in sports and to play musical instruments, but you should wear them for 22 hours a day. The desired movement of the teeth occurs in small steps in the individual rails. That is why each aligner is worn for only one to two weeks.

You will need to come to our practice every four to eight weeks to allow us to monitor the treatment and make adjustments to the orthodontic treatment as necessary. Transparent aligners are practically invisible, so they are not noticeable when you are wearing them.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Adults

On average, an orthodontic course of treatment for adults lasts one to one-and-a-half years. The precise duration depends greatly on the teeth, the treatment plan and the desired results. Minor adjustments can be achieved in as little as roughly six months.

Children

For children, orthodontic treatment is performed in various phases and depends on the developmental stage of the teeth. On average, the treatment takes two to three years, incorporating both removable and permanent braces.

Stabilization

Stabilization, or retention, is necessary after the treatment of both children and adults. To ensure that your new smile and the success of the treatment also remain stable in the long term, we utilize what are known as stabilization or retention splints.

Malocclusion

There can be various causes of malocclusion. These can be congenital conditions, such as:
• Insufficient or actually too much space in the jaws: your teeth have insufficient space, as a result of which they may become crooked. Too much space leads to gaps between the teeth.
• An overbite: the upper teeth protrude over the lower teeth.
• Growth delay in one of the jaws: the lower jaw grows faster than the upper jaw or vice versa.
• Insufficient space for the teeth: there is not enough space for all the teeth, as a result of which some of them emerge crooked.

Non-congenital conditions:
• A fall: a fall resulting in the loss of teeth may cause your teeth to move, as a result of which there is no space for the remaining teeth.
• Thumb sucking: if small children suck their thumb, this may lead to protruding teeth.

Generally, crooked teeth resulting from natural or unnatural conditions can easily be treated. The orthodontist examines your teeth and draws up a treatment plan. You may need to wear braces for up to three years.

Important information

A well-informed patient and good cooperation between the orthodontist, the patient and the parents or guardian are paramount for successful orthodontic treatment. What are the costs of the treatment?

Orthodontic care is not included in the Dutch basic health insurance, also not for children. To be eligible for compensation, Dutch citizens must have supplemental dental care insurance.

Payment in instalments during a treatment period

Interesting fact: you do not have to pay the costs of orthodontic treatment in a lump sum. On average, the total costs for braces are between € 2,000 and € 3,500 for a course of treatment lasting one-and-a-half to three years.

Invoicing

Netpoint Factoring B.V.
For those who do not pay in cash, Orthodontiepraktijk Amsterdam has outsourced the sending and collection of the invoices to Netpoint Factoring B.V.
Upon our request, Netpoint sends the invoices directly to the address you gave us.

Fixed rates

All practices in the Netherlands apply Nederlandse Zorgautoriteit (Dutch Healthcare Authority, hereinafter NZa) rates regulated by law.
A course of treatment is divided into codes with fixed rates. The NZa determines the national rates for orthodontic treatments each year, so it does not matter where you live or where you receive treatment.
